Studio Ghibli’s Next Chapter! Preserving Its Soul Beyond Hayao Miyazaki

FOLIO OTN – Studio Ghibli is approaching an uncertain but potentially transformative period as the legendary Hayao Miyazaki gradually steps away from the center of its filmmaking activities. Rather than rushing to find a replacement or immediately announce another feature, the studio appears willing to let its future develop naturally. A recent report describes this uncertainty as a deliberate part of Ghibli’s current direction. 

More than two years after The Boy and the Heron, Ghibli still has no new feature film officially lined up. Instead of following a fixed production schedule, the studio seems to prefer waiting until a compelling creative idea emerges. This approach is consistent with the studio’s long-standing reluctance to let market research or commercial expectations dictate what kind of films it makes. 

That philosophy also means there is currently no clearly designated successor to Miyazaki. His influence on the studio is so distinctive that simply appointing another filmmaker to occupy his position would not necessarily make sense. Ghibli appears more interested in preserving its creative principles than reproducing the exact formula that made Miyazaki famous.

Interestingly, Miyazaki himself has not completely disappeared from the studio. Reports indicate that he continues to visit Ghibli regularly, despite his advanced age and the fact that his latest feature was initially expected by many to be his final major film. His continued presence leaves open the possibility that he could still develop another idea, although no new feature from him has been confirmed. 

The question of artificial intelligence adds another layer to Ghibli’s future. Miyazaki has historically expressed strong reservations about AI-generated animation, particularly when technology appears to replace the human experience and craftsmanship behind animation. However, the studio’s current leadership appears to take a more nuanced position toward emerging technology. 

Goro Miyazaki has suggested that Ghibli should not automatically approach AI with hostility. Instead, the important issue is how such technology is used and whether it undermines the creative values that define the studio. This does not necessarily mean Ghibli is preparing to embrace AI-generated filmmaking, but it suggests that technological change will not simply be ignored.
