The studio is also demonstrating that its creative activities do not have to revolve exclusively around theatrical features. In July 2026, Ghibli presented Night in the Valley of Witches, a short film directed by Goro Miyazaki and Akihiko Yamashita at Ghibli Park. The project represents one way the studio can continue experimenting while remaining outside the pressure of producing another major theatrical release.
Another important aspect of this transition is the studio's management. Kenichi Yoda became Studio Ghibli's new president and CEO in 2026, while the company continues to operate with Hayao Miyazaki and Goro Miyazaki involved in its leadership structure. The changes suggest that Ghibli is gradually preparing for a future in which its identity cannot depend entirely on one legendary creator.
For longtime fans, the lack of a clear roadmap might initially sound worrying. Yet Ghibli’s decision not to force a successor, rush another movie, or immediately transform its creative process could actually be its way of protecting what made the studio special. Rather than asking, “Who will become the next Miyazaki?”, the more important question may be whether Ghibli can create an environment where a completely different filmmaker can develop an equally authentic voice.
For now, the studio’s future remains intentionally open-ended. There is no confirmed next feature, no definitive successor to Miyazaki, and no indication that AI will suddenly become central to Ghibli’s production process. What does appear clear is that the studio wants its next era to evolve without sacrificing the creative identity that audiences have associated with Ghibli for decades.
