Unraveling the Mystery of Jang Mi-ran’s Disappearance and Death: Found Sitting Up, ‘It’s Truly Unimaginable’

FOLIO OTONITY – The SBS program “Curious Story Y” will investigate the case of Jang Mi-ran, who was found dead three months after being reported missing in Jeju.

SBS announced on the 28th that an upcoming episode of “Curious Story Y,” titled “The Case of Jang Mi-ran’s Disappearance in Jeju—Uncovering the Truth of That Day with Her Family,” is scheduled to air.

Previously, Jang Mi-ran went missing after leaving a guesthouse in Hanlim-eup, Jeju, where she had been living long-term with her boyfriend around May 12. Two days after she went missing, her boyfriend reported her disappearance, but it later came to light that the police officers handling the case had improperly closed the case.

Jang’s family refiled the report on the 19th of last month, and police, who launched a massive search, subsequently found Jang’s body in a palm grove in Hanlim-eup, Jeju, on the 24th. The following is the full clip from “Curious Story Y” as reported by SBS.

A place rarely visited even by locals, palm tree branches that snapped at the slightest touch, and an unnatural sitting position. On the 24th, the final sighting of Jang Mi-ran—who was found under a palm tree at the village entrance three months after she went missing—raised many questions.

Even stranger was the location of the discovery—just a five-minute walk from the inn where Mi-ran was staying. Why did it take 104 days to find him in a place so close by?

“You said he was found sitting there? That doesn’t make sense. He must have been moved there from somewhere else.” – Jang Mi-ran’s mother.

 

Last May, Min-gi (a pseudonym), Jang Mi-ran’s boyfriend of 10 years who had once lived with her in Jeju, reported Mi-ran missing to the police shortly after she disappeared. However, his anxious wait did not last long; just two and a half hours after reporting the incident, he received an unexpected message from the officer handling the case.

The investigating officer, Officer Bu, claimed to have spoken directly with Mi-ran and relayed that she was safe, asking them not to look for her. The family believed this and waited for two months, but the truth that later came to light was shocking: there was no record that Officer Bu had ever contacted Mi-ran. So, on the day the report was filed, what evidence did Officer Bu use to improperly close the missing person case?

However, Jang Mi-ran was not the only missing person whose case had been improperly closed by Officer Bu. Shortly after Mi-ran’s case came to light, a 60-year-old man who had refiled his missing person report was also found as a skeleton; this case, too, had been improperly closed by Officer Bu herself.

A series of suspicions arose surrounding a police officer. Officer Bu, who had dreamed of becoming a police officer since his school days—why did he lie about ensuring the safety of the missing people and rush to close their cases?
