Naruto and Boruto are examples of action-oriented shonen anime built around ninja culture, supernatural abilities and long-form character development. The original Naruto anime premiered in Japan in 2002 after Kishimoto's manga began serialization in 1999. Boruto: Naruto Next Generations later continued the story by shifting attention to Naruto's son and his generation.

The appeal of the franchise comes partly from its ability to combine large-scale battles with personal relationships, rivalries and coming-of-age stories. Each generation introduces new challenges while retaining connections to characters and events from the past.
