FOLIO OTONITY - As a fan of Japanese dramas, movies, and anime, you’re surely eager to learn more about this topic. In this post, we’ll discuss the differences in acting styles in anime, dramas, and movies. Keep reading!

Japanese media has exploded in popularity globally due to its uniquely compelling storytelling, relatable emotional depth, and genre-blending creativity. Instead of restricting animation to children, Japan treats it as a sophisticated medium for all ages, while its dramas and films excel at grounded, character-driven narratives.

All of that is largely due to the cast’s ability to make the story even more engaging. The people who portray the characters in these three art forms are called actors (artists) or, in anime, seiyu (声優), which literally means “voice actor”.

Actor Act Natural, Seiyu Act Unique

Character portrayals in movies and TV dramas are usually more realistic than those in anime, partly because they are played by real actors. As a result, the acting in movies and TV dramas is relatively more natural, both in dialogue and in gestures.

Although voice actors are also called “actors”, just like actors in movies and plays, their approach to acting in anime is slightly different from that of movie and play actors, especially in Japan.

Often in anime, characters are portrayed in a more expressive way to make them more engaging and to better convey their emotions to the audience. For this reason, voice actors generally “amplify” their performances to match the expressions of the characters they portray.

In addition, voice actors with unique voices are more likely to leave a lasting impression on both the audience and anime directors. For voice actors, a unique voice is one of their key assets—alongside acting ability—that helps establish their brand and makes them easily recognizable.
