Saiyuki (often referred to as the definitive or collector's hardcover edition) is a 400-page, English-language hardcover manga by Kazuya Minekura, published by Kodansha on August 18, 2020, for $22.99. It follows the Buddhist priest Genjyo Sanzo and his three yokai companions on a dangerous journey west.

Saiyuki: The Definitive Edition No. 2
A classic feel with modern binding and a two-volume format. Distrito Manga has published Saiyuki: The Definitive Edition Vol.2, and in our review, we’d like to discuss some of the reasons why this comic was so successful—especially among female readers—during its time.
This might be explained by the character design, since it’s quite appealing within the manga archetype, but that’s not the only reason. Ultimately, we’re talking about a very interesting and entertaining reinterpretation of one of the most important novels in literary history: Journey to the West .
Kazuya Minekura skillfully weaves a story (and its sequel) that seamlessly blends action and comedy with darker, more mature themes. He even manages to stand out by creating something that can be interpreted as a critique of racism, given that much of his work revolves around racial hatred and the rejection of those who are different (in this case, demons).

It was no easy task for him, given that Journey to the West has been adapted countless times. However, Minekura-sensei’s version stands out thanks to his ability to modernize the story without losing its essence.
This really reminds us of him, and if you’ve ever read his work, you’ll recognize some of his main themes, but he’s also able to add a very personal touch. It’s fascinating, because one of his greatest strengths is striking a balance between paying homage and maintaining his own unique style. He’s succeeded in doing just that, which is another reason why he stands out.
