Review Shikomori Volume 17: Even Without the Main Character, the Feeling Remains the Same

We know Shikimori is an extraordinary character, and many of her best moments come when she’s being intense, but toning down the awkwardness a little wouldn’t hurt—and it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say, “Shaking hands is still embarrassing.” That’s a theme she brings up way too often, even though she does manage to deliver some great moments every now and then.
Actually, even though they don’t play a leading role in this volume, they’re still there. It’s true that they might be a little shyer than usual about certain things, but their relationship is developed very well in terms of the plot, and that gives us beautiful reflections, dialogues, and scenes that are both engaging and tender, appearing more or less frequently.

The author skillfully wraps up each character’s personal storylines in a regular and sequential manner. These aren’t grand narratives or monumental issues, but rather small resolutions related to their futures. That’s great.
The second point is that, as a story about everyday life, this novel delivers on its promise and stands out for its narrative flow, making it an enjoyable read from start to finish—even though there are moments when you feel the romance isn’t as straightforward as you’d hoped. There is indeed a progression in the relationship between Izumi and Shikimori, but it isn’t always clearly evident in their day-to-day interactions.
Third, after seventeen volumes, it’s very clear to me that this is a great manga. It’s well worth reading and will definitely appeal to those who enjoy slice-of-life series, light romantic stories with plenty of humor, and beautiful artwork. At this point, things would have to change drastically for me not to recommend this manga.
