Manga has a long and complex history in early Japanese art. Outside of Japan, the word “manga” is used to refer to comics that were originally published in Japan. The word “manga” (漫画) itself means “strange pictures” or “impromptu drawings,” combining two Japanese kanji, 漫 (man) and 画 (ga).
