Akane-banashi Review
Volume 4 is where I truly fell in love with *Akane-banashi*, for one specific reason: Issho Arakawa. As much as I adore Akane as a protagonist—and have come to appreciate her growth and journey throughout the series—Issho is just as vital to the work's strength, thanks to his uniqueness as a "villain." People often talk about fascinating villains or "reasonable" ones who—in theory—have good ideas but poor execution, a trope common among many classic *Shonen Jump* villains. Yet, Issho Arakawa is no world-destroying supervillain; he represents the pinnacle of an art form and views himself as the guardian of its integrity and sanctity. His clash with Akane is captivating and thrilling, laying much of the series' foundation; upon rereading it for this review, I cannot help but praise Yūki Suenaga’s foresight, as so many key plot points are introduced in this single volume. If the first three volumes didn't fully hook you, the fourth is undoubtedly the series' turning point. If the confrontation between Akane and Issho doesn't compel you to continue, it is unlikely that what follows will.
Indeed, volumes 4 through 6 launch the *Zenza* training arc, marking the true beginning of Akane’s foray into the professional world of *rakugo*. While the initial arc introduced the general dynamics and main cast—and established Akane as a protagonist the reader could root for—the *Zenza* arc strips away the idealized view of *rakugo* as a profession; Almost immediately, Akane is forced to confront the reality that she no longer has the protection of her master, Shiguma, or his disciples, and that the professional world is rife with people whose petty grudges, lust for power, and obsession with worldly hierarchies can destroy anyone's career, no matter how talented they are. This arc feels somewhat disheartening, as the story loses momentum while the creators focus on the brutality of the professional "art" world—particularly highlighting the sexism inherent in the realm of rakugo.

This aspect is balanced out by Akane’s new *rakugoka* mentor: the stern, beautiful, and imposing Urara Ransaika. The dynamic between master and apprentice is compelling; Urara’s pragmatic, straightforward approach provides a counterpoint to the narrative regarding what it means to be a woman in a world supposedly dominated by men. Rather than resorting to standard "female empowerment" rhetoric, the story presents the raw facts: while male-driven sexism can hinder careers, in the performing arts, what truly matters is the quality of the performance and the audience's reaction. These volumes also allow for greater depth regarding the supporting cast—Rokuro, Hikaru, Kaisei, and Karashi—giving them a chance to shine and allowing the audience to get to know them better, rather than treating them as fleeting, underdeveloped figures; the manga portrays them as what they are: professionals dedicated to honing their craft.
However, there is a weak point in the narrative: although the story addresses Akane’s clashes with toxic peers, issues of hierarchy and superiority, and the conflict between her status as a prodigy and the reality of having been handed everything without developing many skills of her own, the impact is diminished because the story ultimately bails her out.
