From Substitute Soul Reaper to Blood Chains: Ichigo Kurosaki’s Most Remarkable Evolutions
--
FOLIO OTN – Ichigo Kurosaki is one of the most recognizable protagonists in Bleach, and his journey is closely tied to the constant evolution of his abilities. What begins with an ordinary teenager who can see spirits eventually develops into a story involving Shinigami powers, Hollow abilities, Fullbring, Quincy heritage, and increasingly powerful transformations.
1. The Boy Who Could See Spirits
At the beginning of the story, Ichigo is a 15-year-old high school student with an unusual ability to perceive ghosts. Despite possessing this gift, his life is initially relatively normal. His circumstances change dramatically after meeting Rukia Kuchiki, whose Shinigami powers become connected to Ichigo when a Hollow attacks his family.
2. Becoming a Substitute Shinigami
After obtaining Shinigami abilities, Ichigo takes on the responsibility of defending humans from Hollows. His enormous Zanpakutō becomes his primary weapon, although he initially has little understanding of the true potential hidden within his powers. His early battles rely heavily on natural combat instincts and physical strength.

3. The Rise of Tensa Zangetsu
Ichigo's development takes a major leap during the Soul Society storyline. Realizing that ordinary Shinigami abilities are not enough, he undergoes intensive training with Yoruichi Shihōin to achieve Bankai. The result is Tensa Zangetsu, a surprisingly compact Bankai that dramatically enhances Ichigo's speed and fighting ability.
4. The Hollow Within
Ichigo's powers become more complicated when his Hollow side begins to emerge. During his training with Kisuke Urahara, he nearly loses himself to Hollowfication. The experience eventually leads him to the Visored, who help him learn how to control this dangerous power instead of allowing it to control him.
5. The Fullbring Chapter
After losing his Shinigami powers, Ichigo spends 17 months living as an ordinary human. His situation changes when he encounters Kūgo Ginjō and the members of Xcution, introducing him to Fullbring abilities. Ichigo attempts to use this power as a path back to his former strength, but Ginjō eventually betrays him and takes his Fullbring.
