Previously, in 2020, the Anyang City Government had introduced Ahn Sang-ho on its official blog as a local independence activist, but recently changed the post's status to private (inaccessible to the public) following the emergence of allegations regarding his collaboration. Scrutiny regarding Ahn Sang-ho’s past arose following statements made by his great-granddaughter, actress Ha Young.
In various entertainment programs and promotional YouTube content, Ha Young repeatedly emphasized that her family came from a lineage of doctors spanning four generations. She stated, "My great-grandfather was one of the pioneers of Western medicine in Hanyang," adding, "After studying medicine in Japan, he opened Korea's first Western medical clinic in Hanyang and treated patients, including Emperor Gojong."
Ahn Sang-ho, Ha Young’s great-grandfather, graduated from Tokyo Jikei Medical School in 1902 and was the first Korean to obtain a Japanese medical license. He is also known as a figure alleged to have collaborated with Japan during the colonial era. This fact came to light later, sparking public outrage.
Ultimately, Ha Young issued an apology, stating, "My understanding of my great-grandfather's life was fragmentary, based on stories passed down through our family. I spoke of him as a figure to be proud of without possessing a complete picture. Ignorance of the truth does not justify disregarding or trivializing history. I fully acknowledge this error and offer a sincere apology as his descendant." Nevertheless, the controversy has yet to subside.
